The steps from deposit to handover: a checklist

A short summary of the steps from deposit to handover, written so you can get the basics before you ask a professional.

Treat the paragraphs below as a checklist on the steps from deposit to handover: read each item and tick off what you have already done.

The process usually begins with viewing the home and negotiating the price, followed by a deposit to hold the unit. The deposit should be set out in a receipt or a deposit agreement, with the conditions for getting it back.

Next come the legal checks, the contract and payment by stages. For a home that already has its certificate, both sides go to a notary and transfer the name; for a home still to be built, you pay in the instalments set out in the contract.

Finally come the inspection, the handover and the registration for the certificate. Check the actual home against the contract and note every defect in the handover report before you sign for it.

This article gives general information only and the rules can change. Before you pay a deposit or sign a contract, ask a lawyer or the competent authority; this is not legal advice.
